It is an occasion to have a picnic and walk on the grass to the accompaniment of opera pieces. Opening weekend will conclude on September 11 with the return of Opera in the Park, the free event at Robin Williams Meadow. Tickets for concerts and parties start at $250, and go up to $10,000. The dress code for the evening is black tie, formal wear. The first, scheduled around an opening-night event, features pre-performance cocktails and dinner at San Francisco’s City Hall, followed by a spectacular afterparty at the City Hall Rotunda. The Opera Ball is back, and so is Opera Park. Any other changes in the opening weekend? General director Matthew Shilvock states that swapping a concert for a traditional full opera production is an experiment for now, but may prove more acceptable to festival audiences. This year, “The Centennial Celebration” hosted by music director Yoon Sun Kim is expected to feature soprano Nadine Sierra, tenors Michael Fabiano and Payne Pati, and baritone Lucas Mechem.
COVID-19 wreaked havoc with early schedules last year, forcing the company to open with Puccini’s “Tosca” in August and follow it up with a “Homecoming” concert in September. The company’s long history of opening the season with fully staged operas seems to be coming to an end – at least for the time being.
